Until the scientific revolution of the mid 17th Century, astrology and astronomy were considered to be one and the same thing. The view had also permeated since Christianity that the Earth was the centre of the Universe, and the first astrologers and astrophysicists’ to challenge this were not only derided as wrong they were also viewed as heretics.
One of these was Copernicus, followed by colleagues Kepler and Gilbert. They attested that rather than the Cosmos being centered on the Earth (Geocentric) it was based in the Sun (Heliocentric) which was considered to be farcical, at the time. Even now, some astrologers can erect a Geocentric Astrology chart to help clients but the much more popular method, is to use the Heliocentric system.
Astrology’s history reaches right back into the mists of ancient civilizations. Aborigines, Mayas, Ancient Greeks, Egyptians all used different methods of astrology. And it is important to remember that many people will still journey under the guidance of the stars, or sail when the tides are correct, which is closely linked to the Lunar Calendar.
The mythology of these early days is still closely woven into our thinking and everyday attitudes. Sunday – ruled by the Sun, Saturday ruled by Saturn, Monday, ruled by the Moon, Thursday ruled by Mars and so on… The Sun and the Moon are considered in technical terms, not planets but Luminaries. The other planets are Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and Chiron.
Astrology’s primary premise, is that planetary activity effects events on Earth, so the saying was coined “as above, so below.” Astrology records the patterns or cycles of the planets, and how that influences us. Although many scientists scorn astrology, a prominent astrophysicist Dr Percy Seymour found in his book The Evidence of Science that planetary positions in a personal astrological birth chart, known as a natal chart, do influence our personalities.
